Spring is springing here in the DC suburbs, so I thought it would be a good time to give this blog another try. With two gardens going, one at home and a bigger one through my local community gardening program, I decided to try something a little different this year.
My home plot, which consists of a single raised bed, is going to be where I grow our very favorite things, and the things that need to be harvested often or that I need to keep a close eye on. It’ll have peas, green beans, salad and southern greens, bell peppers, two kinds of summer squash, and some cherry tomatoes. I’m also hoping to squeeze in an heirloom tomato of some sort, but my list is already pretty long!

At the big garden, I’m going to focus on some of the bigger crops that we love, as well as varieties for canning and pickling. So this one is going to have bigger greens like cabbages, and some extra kale and such. I’ll grow the processing tomatoes, pickling cucumbers, and winter squash there. I’m also going to try corn with dry beans growing up the stalks this year. My daughter begged me to give watermelon another try, so it’ll get a whole bed to itself, and I’ll plant a couple vines. I’m also going to move my pepper jungle there, since it was taking over the deck. (Whoops!) All of this will be in addition to the perennials that live there: the rosemary, lavender, perennial onions, and the blackberry canes. I also have some garlic there at the moment, which will come out in the summer. Last year I was able to get out the plot once or twice a week, so I’m planning that it’ll be a similar situation this summer as well.
So yeah, needless to say, I’ll have a lot going on! I didn’t even mention the carrots and radishes that I’m just going to cram wherever they’ll fit.
So whats going on in the garden this week? Things are starting to happen at my home garden. A lot of my potted tea herbs are coming in, and we planted some early spring plants that are starting to sprout as well. Only the peas have decided to not show themselves yet.

I always love the optimism that comes with spring time. The weather is starting to hint at warmth, the days are getting a little bit longer, and the flowers and greenery are starting to show themselves. I know a lot of us are going to be isolated for a while because of everything going on, but hopefully you get a little chance to catch some of those warm sun rays outside!
